Assignment 8A - Solving the Problem

My resolution to increase recycling rates is to offer a valet recycling service. There is a decent amount of recycling options available to residential areas. However, there are not for apartment complexes and businesses. There are a few businesses that have companies that take care of their recycling, but this is normally just cardboard. As we all know, there is a lot more to be recycled than just cardboard.

My services would be available to individuals in apartment complexes at a low monthly fee of $15/month for a scheduled (1) weekly pickup. For business, $40/month for a scheduled (1) weekly pickup and $55/month for pickup twice a week. I would also consider, pickup once a week for rural residential areas at a monthly cost of $30. I would provide a custom container that would have separate compartments for glass, aluminum, cardboard/paper and plastic; large containers/dumpsters for businesses. After which, some of the recycled items would go to a nonprofit/charity for recycling and others sold to recycling facilities. For individuals who don’t want a recurring monthly cost for scheduled services, I would offer one-time bulk pickup for $65. As well as, pickup for specialty items.

  1. Such a good idea. The fact that you created an affordable service is also a plus. However, I feel like the $65 bulk pick up should be lowered a little bit. People will be less inclined to use your service when they could easily drive somewhere to drop it off instead. While I get its more of a convenience fee, 65$ is a little steep just to get garbage picked up you feel?

  2. Hey Kellye! I had no idea that apartment complexes did not receive recycling services. I’m curious to know what you’d be able to produce from the recyclables on top of the service fee? Also, have you considered making the custom containers out of recyclables you already collected? I think it might be really cool (and probably cheaper)
