Assignment 2A - Bug List

1. Individuals who park between two parking spaces

WHY it exists: This is not illegal. Certain states fine individuals who park in between two parking spaces. However, Florida is not one of those states and many people do this because they can without penalty.

2. Lack of adequate parking spaces in apartment complexes

WHY it exists: This is a major issue with every apartment complex I have ever lived at. This exists because the complex wants to preserve more room for units. Which, results in more revenue for them.

3. Mandatory requirements that force you to change your password

WHY it exists: I deal with this all the time at work. I understand this exists for security purposes, mainly because a lot of individuals tend to set simple passwords that are easy for them to remember (risk).

4. Using the express lane (10 items or less) at a grocery store when you have way more items than allowed

WHY it exists: Employees don’t enforce this possibly because they don’t feel it is worth the possibility of confrontation/bad customer experience. However, for the individuals in line that actually have 10 items they are having to wait, rather than being able to take advantage of the purpose of why an express lane exists.

5. When a free trial requires your credit card information

WHY it exists: Companies hook you with the “free trial” and then require your credit card information to redeem the free trial. They do this in hopes that you will forget to cancel after the free trial period. Thus, allowing for them to charge the full normal rate.

6. Rarely an option for valet recycling in apartment complexes.

WHY it exists: Even though valet trash is available, most of the companies that perform these services don’t offer the option for valet recycling. Plus, a lot of apartments lack storage space to house appropriate containers for recycling.

7. When people do not wipe their sweat off of their workout equipment/benches at the gym.

WHY it exists: This exists because the gym personnel do not walk the floor enough to ensure that equipment is being wiped down and weights are re-racked. Even though I understand this is a personal responsibility, a lot of people in the gym don’t care to do it. Whether the gym member or the employee, this should be done.

8. Product packaging that is extremely hard to get open

WHY it exists: I understand this is important for several reasons. Such as, deterring shoplifters, product protection, or even because of certain regulations due to the contents. However, I often find difficult plastic packaging around some of the least valuable items.

9. Traffic lights are SO long in certain areas of Orlando and not in others

WHY it exists: Orlando is a heavily populated area, period. However, certain areas that don’t seem to have as much traffic as others, have lights that are excessively long. For these areas, the timers/sensors need to be monitored for proper functioning and accuracy.

10. Having full conversations/inappropriate ones via text

WHY it exists: There are gaps in what is acceptable to discuss via text. Some conversations are better to have over the phone or in person. Also, a lot of people have issues with speaking face-to-face or over the phone and prefer text.

11. When you’re speaking and say something or answer a question in school and then someone says that exact same thing you just said.

WHY it exists: This exists because we are not actively listening.

12. When talking/arguing with someone and they don’t allow you to finish what you are saying before they start talking over you.

WHY it exists: Most of us don’t understand what mindful communication is. Plus, we are listening to respond, instead of listening to understand.

13. Customer service help lines that are fully automated.

WHY it exists: This exists because it is more costly to pay an employee for the time it takes to resolve general customer service calls. Also, it frees an employee up from handling routine calls and allows them to deal with other tasks. However, there are some issues that AI can’t resolve. Plus, it’s nice to speak to a live person.

14. When you hold the door open for someone or do something kind and they respond by making a noise, instead of simply saying “thank you” or something else that shows gratitude.

WHY it exists: I don’t know if this is because one was not taught or because of something else in their upbringing. However, a lot of people consider this to be rude when a few simple words seem hard to come by.

15. People sitting on their phone while at the gym

WHY it exists: There are no cell phone rules in the gym. Better yet, there are no rules or time limits set on equipment (weights) like there are on cardio machines.

16. Two cars riding side-by-side and don’t allow you the ability to pass

WHY it exists: This may be because we are paying attention to the road ahead (we should) or distracted by listening to music or talking. In the event, that one does look in their side or rear-view mirror, they should safely move over to allow one to pass.

17. People pulling out in front of you on a straight away when no other cars are behind you.

WHY it exists: This exists because we are in a rush most of the time and/or impatient. I don’t feel there is really any way to manage this other than to slow down. My issue with this is that one may not estimate the distance/speed of the oncoming vehicle and it could result in an accident.

18. When waiting in line for an extended amount of time to order food and then the person in front of you doesn’t know what they want when it is time to order

WHY it exists: Instead of talking or being distracted by our cell phones, we should be taking a proactive approach to assist in reducing the wait time. Perhaps, looking at a paper menu or even looking at a menu on our cell phones would be a good idea so we are ready when it is our turn.

19. When your main entrée comes out before you finish your appetizer

WHY it exists: Generally, the server puts your order in too soon. This may be because they are not paying attention to the table or maybe because they have too many tables at one time and don’t want to forget, so they put the order in once it is taken.

20. People driving in the left lane (passing) while not even going the speed limit

WHY it exists: I don’t believe most individuals know that the left lane is actually just for passing and that driving in the left lane, in most states, is actually illegal and dangerous.

Reflection: This exercise was actually fun! At first, I thought it was a little challenging. However, once I started thinking more about why a problem exists versus why it bugged me, I was able to complete this task with little difficulty.

  1. I felt #4 a lot more than I should have. I think when it boils down to it it is more of a common decency and respect problem, which is the case for most of the bugs on the list when you think about it. Most people are too engrossed in themselves and their lives to think about the consequences their actions have on others and the world around them. On a separate note, I think there has to be a way around #5, I hadn't really thought to go farther than my 15 fake emails, but maybe there is a way?
